I looked at the forum list and didn't see one marked NEWBIES so I'm posting here. Sorry if this is the wrong place.

I signed up literally a few hours ago, paid acount. I'm wondering if there is a fast track tutorial or something that can get me up to speed on what I want to do.

1) - Sound Sensorium

I want to build a small realm where people can hear strange and funny sounds and music I create, all family friendly, in a a simple environment. I have extensive sound design and programming experience so I don't need help with that. I already found the scripting reference so I just need to become familiar with it.

If someone could point me to the correct help reference I'd appreciate it.

2) Event Scheduler

How are events scheduled in SL? Is there some kind of known create, publicize, and notify system? Or are people freeforming it via the forum?

3) Ambient Sounds in Open Areas

How are people adding those funny sounds to the game when they just seem to be hanging out and walking by? I noticed this even in the Welcome area.

Thanks.

sounds can be ambient or on demand the scripting wiki mentioned above would be a start so would the scripting forums (probally some premade scripts in there that will suit you fine)

making a place would require you to have someplace to put it, which means steping up into premium and to buy enugh land, or renting land from someone

Events are handled tru the website (if you use the little drop box in the upper right of the page you will see it) They are relayed to a menu ingame (find button -> events tab)

If a user wishes to be notified theres a button under the event discription that allows them to do so

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Ok thanks both of you. I'll take a look at the links you gave me.

Re: premium / building

Already have a premium account. Unfortunately there are no "first land sales" available. I'm going to wait a day or two as "live help" suggested. As soon as some becomes available I'll pick up a 512 plot. :)

I dont know alot about audio files in SL but have picked up a few things I willl send you in SL.

Here is a little info I have collected.

Q: what format do i need to convert my files to so that they work in SL?
*
A: Mono, 16 bit WAVE ( .wav ), 44100Hz
Each audio clip must be less than 10 seconds long or it won't upload.
To join them together you need a script.

Depending on how much building you plan on doing for the Sound Sensorium, a visit to the Ivory Tower of Primitives in Noyo (look it up in Find -> Places) might be a good idea. It is an excellent self-guided tutorial to the SL building system.

Select the "Community" link on top of this page, then go to "Events", it's got pretty detailled instructions. There are a few rules as to which land you can or can't use for events, which are explained on the "Add event" page. If I understand it correctly, the parcel has to be greater than 512sqm (not greater or equal), so a parcel of first land won't cut it, alas :(

Additionally to the in-world events listing, you can advertise it under "Special attractions" in the "Classifieds" section of this forum.

@ArchTx Edo,

Ok, thanks I'll have a look.

@Jackal Ennui,

I'll go look at the Ivory Tower of Primitives in Noyo. I guess I'll have to practice in one of the sandboxes for now.

re: Events

I need to add some detail. I know how to use Upcoming.org's web services API to coordinate events. Upcoming.org has facilities for web event calendaring, reminders, notifications, and for showing and sharing who is attending an event; with RSS feeds available for all. People are using it right now for "real world" events, I was thinking of creating something for myself and the SL universe to use for free. But I don't want to bother if there is something already in place in SL. Upcoming.org was recently acquired by Yahoo, but they have kept it completely free (and ad-free thankfully).

SL events are shared via eventful.com (see this thread), which sounds vaguely similar to what you are describing - I'm not really familiar with any of those two services though and might be way off.

@Jackal Ennui,

That's exacly what I wanted to know, thanks! Saved me a bunch of wasted time. What's weird is that site's layout has a striking similarity to Upcoming.org. Strange.
