Hi all,
I think this has been asked about a year ago, but no answer came up, and I can't find it in the FAQs:
How can I change the description of a copied object, so that the new description is different from the original?
Basically, I'm copying a rezzed self-built object and changing a texture. Then I want to change the copy's name and description, but the properties page is greyed out, so I have to use properties via the inventory. All goes well until I take the item back into inventory, when the description reverts back to the original. The name change via inventory is applied though.
Same thing happens whether obj is rezzed or not. -I can type a new description, but the change is not applied once it's gone through the inventory.
Thanks in advance.

If the fields in the object's edit window are grayed out, then I would assume you don't have permission to edit said object. Look at the general tab of the edit window and see which boxes are checked. It should tell you right away what you can an cannot do to the build.

There seems to sometimes be a glitch when you change a name in inventory and it reverts back later.
If you rez the object and change the name from the Edit menu it is OK.
Perhaps that is what is happening here?

From: someone Basically, I'm copying a rezzed self-built object and changing a texture. That sounds like it's either an attachment (doesn't seem like it from your description), or there's a no modify item inside of the object (an anim, texture, script, ...)? If there's a no mod item inside of the object, try taking it out before changing the name and then putting it back in.

Thanks all, esp Kitty.
I haven't been able to reproduce the problem I had.
I may have been trying to change the description while the object was attached to me.
Anyway, now if I res it in a sandbox, unattached, I have full access.
My only excuse is that I'm still new to SL & building!
edit: I think I know what I did now: you can't change the description when building if using the "select texture" button, as the general properties tab is greyed out. Can't "take" the object either. Switch to rotate/move etc first.
