Strange error even in most basic sphere

Hey all, haven't sculpted for some months. After some fresh sculpting I noticed that everything I created had a big gap in it. So then tried even the default nurbs sphere in Maya with the same result. Using that "new" advanced exporter. Screenshot attached.

Anyone know what's the problem?

Woops, wrong file type to upload. Edited the OP.

The hole goes right through the poles and then builds a gap from there one outwards.

Before you export your sculpt map, select your object in Maya and do the following:

1. Modify -> Freeze Transformations

2. Modify -> Reset Transformations

3. Edit -> Delete By Type -> History

4. On the exporter dialog, make sure Correct Orientation is checked.

Always do those things before exporting, and the surface should come out fine. Forget to do any of them, and you'll have problems.

By the way, if you see a horizontal scrollbar across the bottom of the exporter window, get rid of it. It's covering up important checkboxes. Depending on where you got the script, this may or may not have been corrected already. To correct it yourself, look for the word "scrollable" in the script. Change the 1 that's next to it to a 0.

Thanks! I tried all of this but the gap is still unchanged. The scrollable thing is handy though, I had originally set $generate_primscript to 1 in the script but this is certainly smarter. Again the problem is still the same sadly.

Edit: just to show you this is the plain default sphere I attached a screenshot of it.

So I exported some parts of that ant from the wiki and while the preview had gaps, the actual sculptie didn't. But my simple sphere remains having a gap in both the preview and uploaded. So I'm rather confused now. Can't spot a difference. Do I need a certain amount of sections and spans nowadays?

From the simple perspective of editing the 'sculpt map' image...

Typically – in fact I think I have yet to hear otherwise – this problem means the sculpt map is being generated at an incorrect rotation, and needs to be turned 90 degrees. Thus you can fix the map itself in literally any image editor. (I think any more complicated answers are all about telling 3D applications how not to generate it wrongly in the first place.)

Unfortunately the preview window only shows sculpties on Plane rather than Sphere mapping, so if you don't want to waste any L$, you'll have to upload them on the beta grid first to see whether you got them right.

The sculpt map needs to be rotated 90 degrees.

Normal view-motion controls work in the upload window, btw. I found out by accidentally zooming and discovered this featurette.

The sculpt map needs to be rotated 90 degrees. Domino Marama explained this in another thread as being the result of the seams/poles getting switched, which makes sense when you look at it.
