I know I'm going to feel dumb when I read the answer, but how do you folks handle this?
You're building a device that will help you acheive world domination and it's going to take several sessions. When you end a session you "take" the incomplete flexi-Eiffel-Tower-rocket-launcher-sofa and it goes to your Objects folder. You come back later and rezz it on the ground, but wait! It's still in your inventory too. So after you work on it a while and take it when you're done, you have two of the things. Which is the older version and which the updated version? Do you delete the older version first or just rename it? This all seems awkward. Most people would find it more intuitive to rename the new one -- kind of like "save as" on your computer. Would you just do this in the root prim by adding 01, 02 , etc. to the name of the reworked object? What's the easiest method?
Thanks. -- KC

You can sidestep the issue by telling your inventory to sort by date, this will put the most recent objects in a given inventory folder up top.
I tend to do this, and also periodically dump the old versions into a new subfolder to get the clutter out of my way until I'm sufficiently confident in my newest version to start deleting the old stuff.

when i save/take an item i rename it and add v1.1 to it and edit that each time. now we have to remember to hit return or it wont take name change it never use to be that way :/ also i have a script that would incrment the name on each rez but you need to remember to add it. and searching inventory for it sucks so bad i dont bother -LW

Each time I rez the current project I rename it, increasing the final number (Mask 3 becomes Mask 4), until I'm happy with it, then I rename it without the number.
A week later or so I delete the old versions, once I'm certain I don't want to step back through my progress and empty the trash.

After I rez the item, I delete the copy copy still in the inventory. That way when I take it, i only have the new copy. If there should be some horrible object-losing event, I can always retrieve the previous copy from the trash.
