Do the Huge prims such as 20X20's affect the Sim? Does it cause more lag then having 4 10X10 prims for the same effect?

I own an Island, and in my projects there i've used probably a dozen 20x20 squares, and a good 8-10 20x40 blocks for a wall. I"ve seen no negative effects on sim performance. In fact this weekend we had 33 people in the sim with no lag whatsoever. (yes I was shocked.)

If I remember correctly there was discussion at one fo the Linden get togethers a while back (maybe around October)...Supposedly they *may* cause lag on the server side due to the limitations of prims being programmed there as the 10X10X10, so therefor increasing processing power to resolve the inconsistency. IE, the server expects nothing larger then 10X10X10 and blamo, now there is an object 20X20X20 there, so the program stops a millisec to figure it out and work around it. I suppose if there are enough of these laying about it could cause a backlog on the processing of that sim. Not sure that I believe this could really have that great an effect, but I dod remember the big discussion on them back then by the Lindens, who at the time came to the decision they were only allowed on private sims...

hope that helps in some way..and of course someone correct me if that was not entirely accurate...like I said that was back in OCtober and I dont deal in big prims so it isnt my area of expertise.

I'm guessing part of the reason why there's no official word on their usage on mainland in particular, is because they know quite a lot are being used out there and dont want to piss too many land owners off by suddenly pulling the plug.

But at the same time, wouldn't want to take the opposite stance, say they're ok with them being used, and find everybody uses them.

*shrugs*

They may fail to react to lighting too, as the sub-sections of the prim faces will be too big. That's why a cube face is 18 triangles instead of two, or so it was explained.

I won't use them because I disagree with the behaviour of the creator and would rather not promote their use (assuming they're the ones that were released a while back).

In a recent Technical Town Hall it was said that so long as they weren't causing problems then people could use them.
