I want to show a potential client examples of how SL can be used to simulate a factory environment for training purposes. Can anyone suggest builds that might be an example of this?
If the demo is successful we'll be looking for a builder to build mock-ups of factory machinery to train employees on safe use of equipment.

industrial simulation

RL I lay out factories and build industrial machinery. In my opinion the build tool in SL would be imposibly limiting if you tryed to simulate RL machinery. If your simulation omited an important detail,, and someone trained on the sim got the wrong idea about how to operate the machine it could cause a RL accident... ( starts counting scars ). no i dont agree. hes talking about using SL for traning not expermenting, 3D space has to be better than a 2D picture or a paragrah in a training manual. it would be great way to show someone in an envirmoent than with current training. were talking about known hazards and training not new ground. just using SL as a training tool like text, pictures and video are currently used. -LW

I haven't seen any examples of what you seek, but I'm sure at least teh floorplan part could be. perhaps the machinery itself could be linked to a notecard that gives specific details to fill teh data that prims alone cant manage.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.
The thought is that this would be in addition to existing training. The company is in the certification industry for the pharmaceutial industry. I think it would need to be carefully throught out and designed.
At this time it's more of a demonstration of capability to the senior management to determine if there is enough "meat" there to pursue further.

Speak to FlipperPA Peregrine - he used SL at his company to do training on gas station pump designs.

I would agree that computer simulation can be a great help in training, but SL is very restricted in what can be built... ( some flame efects could be fun... ). Any "model" would take a lot of effort, and maintaining it to bring it in line with diferent national standards and changes in customer requirements would be difficult. You would probably have to pay RL wages rates to get the job done properly.. say 15 kL$ / hour. ( and if you think that's expensive you should see my liability insurance bill ).

personally it would be much more realistic to use something else, aslo you would be able to keep it in house, try explaining to your boss you cant train today becuase of a system outage or upgrade and since you would probally have to pay out some $$ using a more standard system would be ezer in the longrun vs, a propritary system with a small pro userbase besides i think it would be funner to see an arm get ripped off or some good ragdolls, it would drive the point home alittle more if the trainiee got to see a fluid animation of his AV being mutilated, but im just weird like that

You can try giving people like Eon Reality a call and enquire about their services. I think it would be closer to what you need. There are others offering similar interactive 3D capability so its wise to do some investigation. http://www.eonreality.com/On the lower end of the scale, there is truePlay from Caligari offering simple collaborative 3D. http://www.caligari.com/As much as Linden Lab would like to hope that SL can provide the functionality that you mentioned, it is in your best interest to avoid using it for any serious purposes. Ask any level headed senior resident here and you'd get various reasons why.
