Spiral staircase with one prim? Are you kidding me?

Although I am fairly new at building, and have had no 3D modeling experience, I have found that I am generally able to imagine something in my head, or observe another object in-game, and generally re-create it on my own.

But, holy hell, I cannot figure out how to make a spiral staircase for my house. This confusion is further compounded by the fact that I saw a SINGLE PRIM spiral staircase with sides in a store somewhere, and my mind exploded. It looked like a box prim, hollowed and one side cut (to make the two outer walls - "railings" - and the floor of the staircase), but I cannot wrap my mind around how to twist/stretch it correctly.

Any tips or suggestions for making a spiral staircase? I'm out to conserve prims, here.

Try playing with cut twisted tubes maybe?

I have. Nothing seems to make something that both twists around to either the left or the right, while also increasing in height.

I'll have to check when I log back in, but I use spiral ramps in my builds and I *think* I used the Ring shape. IM me later and I'll give you the exact settings. The only drawback is that it will only spiral in one direction.

Edit: Curiosity got the better of me. It is the Ring shape.
Skew at .76
Revolutions at 1.31
Hole size (X) .05

Use a tube. Cut and hollow it. Increase the revolutions. Voila, a spiraling ramp. Depending on how you cut it, you can have up to two railings and a ramp, all with one prim.

Do an in-world search for "Temple of Prim" ...this is a great place to visit when getting started in building.

Hello,

Yes, it is possible to rez a one prim staircase.
I was tired falling off and bumping every where and I got lucky fooling around with a prim.
It even has ramp on both sides so you can't fall off.

I ll be happy to help, just IM me when you see me online.

Did you figure this out, IM me and I can send you one I made and don't mind showing you how it was done.

Also check the Mall in Wagaland, I made a large spiral there, I think each full 360deg spiral covers 10m in height (or could be 5m, I'm not in world to check it).

I got an IM from someone, then crashed before being able to reply. I don't know of a way in SL of going back and looking at IM's if you are online when receiving them.

Anyhow...

Here are some instructions. I also placed one on my land at Wagaland 87,226,24 thats free to copy.

----
Create a Tube.

For a 5m (approx.) stair, make X=6m, Y=10m and Z=10m

Hollow to 95%. This sets your wall thickness, so can go less.

Profile cut to make the wall hieght (around B=.15 and E=.6 works)

Probably need to flip the whole thing now

Finally Skew as required (0.75 works good)

Play with the settings and see if you can improve the shape to what you need.

One big disadvantage: The inside is a hollow prim, and can only have one texture, so the inside of the walls/rail are going to be the same as the floor

negative skew can get you ones that spiral clockwise upwards, but I think those are the kind that occasionally, randomly and permanently, turn into solid cylinders as far as collisions go (borken basically).

So you make the railing part of the floor texture and stretch it all across. ;)

Erm, yes. I think thats what I said.

ofc this is only a disadvantage if you want the rail to look like a rail.

Sorry if I wasn't clear

You can make a textue that is 1/4 railing 1/4 floor 1/4 railing and 1/4 stuff that's going to be cut away. Your rail will look like a rail.
