We recently joined SL and purchased a penthouse. All of this in less than a week. This morning the walls were grabbed accidently. In the process of trying to replace them we have wrecked our new home. The "hand" feature would not stop for either of us and caused havoc. We both had to log out and return to turn it off but we returned to a wrecked home. Is there anyway to put things back to their original state before the accidental grab? OMG I am so stressed over this. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you ReSharpen and BabySweets

hey,
rest assured that "wrecking your own home by accident" is a very common thing to do.
I accidentally deleted half of my house once, when i actually wanted to delete a little candle that i had placed on a wall...
now, if you say you "purchased" a penthouse, did you actually buy a building to put somewhere on some land you own, or did you actually _rent_ a penthouse in someone else's rental building?
If you'Re talking about a building that you own, you should still have a copy in your inventory... just put that out after clearing the place.
If you're actually talking about a rented place, you need to talk to your landlord.

If all you did was move the pieces, select each piece, go to the File menu, and select "undo", and the piece should move back through whatever series of moves you accidentally imposed on it.
If that doesn't work, ask your landlord (if the landlord provided the structure) or home Builder (if you bought the home) for help. I had a client just last week that accidentally tossed the lower half of their new custom home several hundred meters up in the sky. It took me all of about 2 minutes to get it perfectly back into place, since I built it and was intimitaly familiar with how it should go together and how to move parts around accurately.
Once you get it back in place, there is a checkbox on the Object tab in the Edit controlls, marked "Locked". Check that box, and the client will not allow you to move or delete that linkset of prims unless you verify the action with a confirming dialog (in the case of deleting), or un-check that box.

Thank you both SOOO much!! I am breathing easier already. We purchased a penthouse already furnished with a small piece of land I believe. We have a deed and such. My other half is actually the owner. I will have him look at your posts when he gets home from work. Thanks again so much!! We are so loving this place and you both just added to that. hugz, ReSharpen and BabySweets

From: Void Singer does undo work after logging out? I believe that it does, yes. It's been a while since I tested that, however. Torley did a video on this Undo trick, and it is extremely handy. I do believe that it only applies to undoing the changes you yourself did. I don't think someone who simply has mod rights on your prims can undo and action that you did. And the Undo does not work on texture changes. Just on movement and a variety of dimensional changes.

why is that "hand" on all the time? Resharpen is working on fixing this and I am just standing there yet the "hand" is on my screen. I don't understand this "hand' and why it won't go away. It is what caused all this anyway. ACK!

From: Lance Corrimal I accidentally deleted half of my house once, when i actually wanted to delete a little candle that i had placed on a wall... I deleted my whole house. Twice. Finally I figured I'd better lock the prims so at least I'd get a warning. That worked just fine until one day I got the warning, wasn't thinking, and automatically clicked "Ok" by reflex. Some of us are really slow learners. I felt better when both people who share my land did exactly the same thing to their own houses over a period of a few weeks.

I did the same thing when I was trying to get rid of an empty box that some customer let behind. It never occurred to me that I might have clicked on the floor by mistake, so I ignored the locked message. I have also managed to retexture an entire building when I thought I had checked the "Select Texture" button to change the roof texture. There's no "undo" for that one.

Thank you everyone. We got it somewhat figured out. I am contacting the seller though to put it back. What a relief to know it happens to others. I felt horrible. Love this forum will be here often now LOL. Thanks again! ReSharpen and BabySweets Serenity

I reccomend you try to get to one of the free building classes many places offer, they are quite fun and will teach you many cool basic tricks. There is a feature to "lock" objects too that you will probably find very handy.
You can find classes in SEARCH> EVENTS> EDUCATION, there's even a cool reminder thingy to let you know 5 minutes before classes you select.

Hi BabySweets . the hand or hand with a finger pointing is from a script somewhere that`s touch active i would quess. I build and sell houses and regulerly get IM`s about "ruined houses" . The storys i could tell , LOL . It`s okay , like other`s have posted , most houses are copy , which means it can be replaced . Advice I give out when I`m helping someone new . Lock the prims after the house is set out. Another nice thing to do is copy the x,y,z vectors of the house or if it`s a rezz box copy it`s vectors and put them in a note card and maybe name the card "my house" . If you do by chance have a boo boo , you can put a new one out in the exact location as the old one. Hope this is helpful Dani , DD Designs

After my fun and games with house deletions, I got into this habit: I select the house and bring up the Edit window with the second pane open. Then I take a screen shot and store it on my computer. That captures all the positional and rotational settings at once. If I mess up and have to re-rez the house, I'll have to type in the numbers manually, but that seems easier than typing them all into a notecard to begin with -- mainly because I always figure I'll never have to use it. Famous last words I suppose.

You are now an official SLer.
omg, I've broken so many houses... poseballs... hair... you name it! Even exploded a build once by accidentally setting the entire thing to "physical," you should have seen that baby come down - it was quite a sight to see. Nice thing about this virtual world is there isn't too much you can't fix, it just takes a little time and practice to get good at using the edit/build tools.

From: Daniel Dunderdale the hand or hand with a finger pointing is from a script somewhere that`s touch active i would quess. A little more detail: There are two "hand" cursors. The hand with the index finger pointing is, as Daniel said, an indicator that there is a script in the object that reacts to touch. Probably the script does something like change the look of the walls or close the windows. Note that it is possible to have an object that reacts to only the owner's touch; confusingly, you will still see the "hand" cursor, even when it won't react to YOUR touch. Touching something with this "hand" cursor will not move or drag the thing. The second hand cursor is a hand in a simple curved position. This is actually a "grab" cursor, and it only is shown when your cursor is over an object that is "physical" (that is, has physics turned on and so reacts to gravity etc..). By holding the mouse left button down on a physical object, you can drag it. (This is how you throw a bowling ball in SL!) Probably this is not the case with your house -- if you dragged a physical wall out of place it would most likely fall down! Welcome to the forums and to SL!
