Hello, I am trying to make a spiral sculpty, now i understand its a bit hard to explain how on here but, I have tried blender (headace) and sculptypaint (lack of tutorials) but neither (prob me) seem to do it that well? or at least I not worked it out!

Any tips? the think i am trying to make isa bit of loose cable...you know how flex loops rouns the light chains that hang? just like that... no dosnt even need to be a perfect loop!

Are you sure you need a sculptie? I would have thought a little prim torture would get you something pretty reasonable for that, unless you have a particular, uneven look in mind?

You probably won't like this answer, but it's the only one I've got. The most likely reason you're struggling is because you're approaching the situation bass ackwards. The thing to do is to learn how to use your program of choice first, and then apply that knowledge to whatever it is you want to make. Don't start out off the bat with, "I want to make ______; now how do I do it?" or you're all but guaranteed to experience nothing but frustration.

So you know, for anyone with the requisite experience, the kind of shape you're talking about is among the simplest items one could possibly make in any full featured modeling application like Blender, Maya, Max, etc. If it takes five minutes, it was done slowly. But if you've got zero experience, it's probably not going to be something you'll just be able to figure out right away.

If Blender is what you want to use, I'd suggest you start by watching the Machinamatrix video tutorials, at http://blog.machinimatrix.org/video-tutorials/. They're by far the best instructional material on Blender that I've ever seen. Once you've been through a bunch of them, you'll have a good handle on how Blender works, and then it will become fairly obvious to you how to make your loose coils, or just about any other shape you could think of. Just don't expect to be able to do it today or tomorrow. It's going to take a bit of time and commitment.

Have fun. :)

Antena - was just messing with prims and came up with spiral. No need for sculpty:

Create a ring: Path Cut b - 0 e - 1;
Hollow 0 Skew 0.95;
Twist b - 0 e - 0;
Hole x - 0.05 y - 0.05
Top Shear x - 0 y - 0;
Profile Cut b - 0 e - 1;
Taper x - 1 y - 1;
Radius 0.9 Revs 4

Thanks for all the reply's, ill try the prim torture for some stairs but yes it is a sculpty look I am after I like how they are slightly uneven.

Yes I am still new to blender so ill have a look into more guides, so Blender is the way to go for this not sculpty maker?

Oh Carbon that spiral is perfect! thanks :)

I think I need to go back to normal prims, I I am only about 1mth old and didnt know much about torture of prims I might go find a class. I am amazed what what people achieve with normal prims, I made an aircraft and the guy in the hanger next to mine I asked what he sculpted with, his reply was "nothing, its just normal prims" and you have to see it... its the most amazing spitfire i have ever seen! but he is very good with textures.

So yes to all lots to learn but you have helped

Glad it worked.
Here's a link to a great site - an (if not the) ultimate guide to torturing prims to amazing shapes: http://ayumicassini.blogspot.com/2009/07/ultimate-guide-to-prim-twisting.html

Happy bending :D
