Dane, I would get some of the available freebie houses out there and take them apart. I recommend looking at the freebies first because you can usually rez them and then delink all the pieces using ctrl-shift-L. Once you delink them you can click on each piece and look at the prim properties and see how they are made. Pay attention on how the texture and transparency is applied to each prim. Also pay attention to how many prims are used since using as few prims as possible is good because that leaves you more prims for furniture. You may also want to go to the ivory tower of primitives to see how to get prims into different shapes.
