Ok, I must have missed something here, but I'm building a prim skirt with ruffles. I'd like to be able to unlink parts of it and delete individual ruffles - but unlink and delete are not available when I select any or all of the ruffles - what gives? Thanks for your help! Joan

I think I understand what you are trying to do. Try this. With the whole thing selected, check the "edit parts" box. Then, select the part you want to delete. Unlink from the tools menu. This should unlink only this one piece. Then delete it.

I'm not in game right now, writing this from memory, but I think that is how it works.

unlink delete

I've had the same problem. After i choose "edit linked part" make sure that part is now highlighted and nothing else. Then you have to uncheck "edit linked part" to be able to delete that part.

Thanks Pippin and Baron,

I'll try unchecking "edit link part" next time. I found a workaround (although it was time-cosuming) by "dropping" the attached prim, then I could unlink the whole thing and delete individual prims as needed. Not that I'd recommend my workaround method as I had to basically reposition and adjust each ruffle in the skirt. It's done now though - whew! (To see end results, click here: http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=73276)

Thanks again,

- Joan

Ohhhhh, you mean you were trying to unlink prims while the skirt was attached? To my knowledge, there's no way to do that (since the game would then have to maintain both items at the same attachment point until you deleted one of them)...

building things attached to avatars

Rini,

Thanks so much for the validation - thought I was going a little crazy there. Is there an easier way? If I'm building something that'll be worn by an avatar, is the only method to build it close to the right size then reposition on the avatar and hope nothing needs to be deleted?

Thanks for any insights,

Joan

The only thing I know of that resembles a workaround would be to simply move pieces that you want to "delete" away from your avatar and continue working without them. This way, you don't have to constantly unattach and reattach to change pieces, and when you're finished working, you can simply rez the skirt to the ground, unlink and delete the extra pieces, and then take it back.

Something to watch out for: Make sure that you never move the ROOT prim out of the way like this. Moving and/or deleting the root prim will change the attachment location and/or position for the rest of the object.

In a similar fashion, when you're building, you can sometimes create and link a number of basic prims to your work (being careful of the root prim, as mentioned above), then attach the object and shape/assemble them from there.

It's hardly perfect, but... *shrug* It's an idea.

Stand on a pedestal (also known as a posing stand, or poser stand), build your skirt directly around your avatar, then attach the skirt as a final step when it's done. The pedestal will stop all avatar movement so you can build the skirt exactly how you want. You can get one just about anywhere these days, or you can make your own. Rickard Roentgen sells a great one with about 8 different poses in it if you're looking to shop for one.

Ok Joan, there are a few things that spring to mind. First, if you are selecting some of the ruffles under "edit linked parts" you should be able to unlink them, but as long as "edit linked parts" is ticked, you won't be able to delete anything. So untick that box, and just select the bits that you have unlinked before deleting.

Why you can't unlink seems like a permission issue. Did you make the skirt yourself, and if not, do you have full perms? If you do have full perms, or made it yourself, i've noticed that sometimes it takes a while with objects containing a lot of prims to register for you to mod them. Under "general" it will say you cannot modify this object, but give it a little bit while its selected and it will usually come round. Then edit linked parts, select what you want to unlink, unlink them, deselect the rest of the skirt which should appear highlighted again in blue after you unlink, make sure "edit linked parts" is unticked, and delete your unwanted prims.

Hi guys.

I'm having this problem as well. I tried what was suggested here in this thread with checking and unchecking the edit linked parts box but when I uncheck it won't allow me to just pick the piece I want to delete. Is there a key combinatin I'm missing here or is it just the delete key like I would delete an item I dont want thats in world.

Thanks
