Sounds like something got corrupted and now Maya is unable to load several key scripts, including the render settings UI. I'd suggest you run a chkdsk on whatever drive you've got Maya installed on, and if it finds any errors, let it try to fix them. I'd also suggest running a SMART test to see if the drive might be starting to fail. One of my drive's died just two days ago, so maybe there's a full moon in Hard Drive Land or something.

Also, when's the last time you defragged the drive? If it's badly fragmented, that can certainly cause difficulty in finding and/or loading files. SL is particularly brutal on hard drives in this regard (unless you have your cache on a dedicated scratch disk), and rendering operations tend not to be exactly kind either. If you don't mind investing a little money to keep your drives from ever fragmenting again, I highly recommend Diskeeper. It's a fantastic utility.

In any case, after you're done diagnosing, and hopefully fixing, the drive, uninstall and reinstall Maya. Assuming the drive is not actually failing, that should set things back to normal.

I deleted preferences and got it to load. I will run defrag now just to be sure. I installed Zbrush 3.5 yesterday and it installed a new C++ thing so maybe that contributed.

I'm glad that worked. I'd still recommend running a chkdsk, just to be on the safe side. And defrag at least once a week, if you're not using an auto-defragger like Diskeeper.
