I'm just starting to explore the SL environment, primarily from a perspective of content generation. My company wants to create a SL presence and it's fallen to me to lead the way. (Poor saps).

Been researching the Sculpted Prims articles and am able to handle all the setup workflow in modo—rendering out the RGB sculpt texture and the surface textures. (modo does it all, by the way, within the base program—no exporter, no scripts, though I'm sure the process could be scripted, once all the glitches are worked out.)

Can someone point me in the right direction for the rest of the process? I've downloaded the new beta client but am blank as to how I get my texture files into SL to see how they look.

Sorry for hitting an advanced forum with such a mundane request (and I'm certainly willing to educate myself once I know where to look), but there's a lot to absorb here, and I'm kind of doing it all in about three days.

Any help appreciated.

To upload a texture, click file > Upload texture and find it on your computer. Once it's uploaded create a new primitive by right-clicking the ground and selecting create, then click on the cube icon on the menu system that pops up. From the same menu system click "More >" and then Object (I think, can't access SL to check), from there click the drop-down box on the right entitled Prim type and select sculpted prim. Now drag your texture you uploaded onto the space on the space in the edit window and your sculpted object should take shape.

I might have missed or messed up a little in the above but you should be able to work your way through that.

Also -- dont forget that if you start an upload and don't like the way it looks you just hit cancel and you don't have to pay for the upload..its a free previewer.

Don't worry about mundane requests; it happens all the time. It's true that some stuff is best searched for in the search box right up above, but if that doesn't work out smoothly, go right ahead and ask.

Here's the famous video that introduced us all to the properties of Sculpted-type prims. Much like it indicates there, to make such a prim, you have to first make yourself any sort of prim, then under the Object tab, change its Building Block Type to Sculpted.

As for the upload itself, you just do the usual L$10 (that's around 4 cents) texture upload in the File menu, and select it off of your computer. Once it's been picked, you'll have the image previewed in the SL uploading window, and be able to use the drop-down menu to preview it as a Sculpted shape. The interesting thing to note is that you can click and drag on that preview to rotate and view it from different angles, and even ctrl-click to allow vertical rotation.

If you're stuck or even slowed down by something, do make sure to come back and seek answers. I myself quite like to challenge the idea that using SL can't be learned really quickly.
