have you thought about a triangular somewhat transparent phantom prim with the brightness turned up?

not sure if you can do brightness, transparent and phantom at the same time but it's worth a shot. with the right texture you could make it look like a beam of light shining down

To make a beam of light, you want to use a plain white texture that grades from opaque at one end to transparent at the other. It takes 2 seconds to make one in Photoshop:

1. Create a new image with a blank white canvas.

2. On the Channels Palette, create a new channel (by default it will be called Alpha 1) and flood it with a black-to-white gradient.

3. Save as 32-bit TGA and upload to SL.

That's all there is to it. Now just apply the texture to a prim and set it to Full Bright.
