I've been making sculpties for a while and have found Zbrush to be my favorite tool for making them. However I am finding limitations with it, and having a little difficulty finding methods to achieve some of the results I want.

I'm looking for a way to create sharp edges, and/or curved objects with accurate results. When I create objects with Zbrush with a sharp edge, or am trying to make something with a lot of curves, it ends up looking nothing like what I created in Zbrush after conversion.

I see objects like window sills, twisty pipes, and all kinds of crazy things done with single sculpty prims. One thing I am trying to create, for example, is a S shaped pipe for the underside of a sink. But when working with Zbrush to create such an object, I end up with a horribly misshapen mass of crap with jaggy edges. I'm using Sculpty Maker 2.51 for my converter as well, which seems to be the most accurate results for converting meshes with Zbrush.

If anyone has any ideas, or suggestions for alternative software if Zbrush isn't capable of producing these results, please let me know. The only requirement for alternative software, is that it be able to produce an .obj file that I can import into Zbrush for texture baking and refining edges.

In b4 blender.

Seriously, use anything that's easy to use for direct vertex manipulation, wings, blender, ac3d, modo, anything at all. You can export the obj from zbrush and re-import it to texture or convert to a map, so it doesn't matter a jot whether or not the program you choose has sculpty support, just so long as it can import/export an obj.

Download a few trials. If it doesn't click in an hour of looking at a tutorial or simply playing with it, ditch it and try another.

I use sculpt studio and the types of shapes you're talking about are very easy to make with that tool.... I have never used zbrush so I can't give any advice there. If your sculpt isn't oblong, you could try loading the obj into something like sculptypaint and then going from there to a sculpty map instead of using the zbrush exporter?

But my real answer is almost always to check out sculpt studio... just because that's what I use and love, and for the inexpensive price it's just so worth it.
