Okay, so obviously there's the export script. However, I'm wondering if the clever approach Chip used in Max is possible to do in Maya, where he takes an arbitrary model and makes it sculpty-friendly. Basically, is there a Maya equivalent to 3ds max's projection modifier? It looks like Transfer Polygon Attributes does the same thing, but I don't have Maya 8 and would like to know before I bother to upgrade.

Johan,
Same question for me... and I am very keen for someone to run through a step bt step guide how to do this if anyone finds out.

I'm not familiar with the projection modifier, or really much of anything in Max, but if you're talking about what Chip did with those Poser models, then the answer is yes, that can certainly be done in Maya. My approach would be to work by hand, but there are tools to help semi-automate the process if that's what you're looking for. I'm afraid I'm not much of techie Maya user though, more of a by-hand type of artist, so I can't really help you with MEL or with some some of the fancier tools.

My approach would be simply to chop up the model into appropriate pieces, close each piece at both ends so that each has two poles so that it becomes pseudo-spherical as is required for sculpties, and call it a day. I haven't gotten around to doing it yet with any of my models, but it has been on my to-do list for a while now, and theoretically there's no reason it shouldn't work.

The UVW mapping wouldn't be compatible with sculpties at that point. You'd still need to edit the mapping on each piece, though that might be as simple as just adding a sphereical UVW modifier to each. Someone needs to experiment with that before we can draw any real comparisons.
