Hi all, sorry if this is a really silly question, but is there a way to cut one object from another? (to create a very simple door & frame in a wall for example. or even just making a hole in the side of something). I've used 3ds max a bit but I've not quite figured out how to subtract one prims volume from another within SL. (or if it's even possible)

thanks :)

No, SL Prims do not do Boolean Subtraction. Gods how I wish it did!

There are some tricks one can do, relating to using the Hollow and Cut functions, that can sort of make an archway for a wall with a door in it, using just one prim instead of three, but the flexibility of that method is severely limited. Ditto for making a wall pierced with a hole in it for a window, with one prim instead of four.

In both cases, the opening is centered on the prim, in all directions, and proportionate to the shape of the prim. Not very useful.

Boolean Subtraction. that's the word I was looking for!

thanks for your reply, I had feared as much. would be a very useful function, you could create 4 walls with holes for windows and doors from one prim :)

LL's been talking about adding "negative prims" to SL for a while now. While technically a little different from actual subtraction, they'll create the appearance of booleans, which will be great. God only knows how long it will be until we get them though.
