Instead of just being able to attach a single shape to part of an avatar, can you link two together and attach them as a single object?
I tried searching for it, but didn't find anything. What's the term for it?

You can link objects together by selecting the objects you want to be linked, then click tools at the toolbar and clck link. Then the ibjects will move around as one even if they arent touching. Good luck

A little additional info for you...
You'll see mention in scripting and other documentation about "root" prims of a link set. The root prim will be the last prim you selected before linking. (Note also CTRL+L is a keyboard shortcut for linking prims).
Don't know which one you selected last? Right click and choose edit from the pie menu. The root prim will be outlined in yellow. All the other prims will be outlined in light blue.
If you need to unlink the set put it in edit mode (as in the sentence above) and select Tools-> Unlink... (or CTRL+SHFT+L). Now you can deselect (click somewhere else) then select the prims in the order you want so you can make a specific prim the root.
Once you select your first prim, hold the Shift Key and right click on each additional prim to add it to the selection. Then link the set.

I had this same issue earlier this morning. You'd be suprised what you can learn when you read the Help (F1) file.
