Hi!
I am building a 3 deck Ship! This is static!
I linked 24 prims until I got a message saying Link failed - pieces too far apart!
I have seen an object with over 200 prims so it should go, but how?
Any help would be great!

It's a matter of distance, size, and prim count. No single set of linked prims can exceed 255 prims. The greatest distance between geometric centers of any two prims is roughly 30 Meters. The max distance between two prims that you can link to each other decreases with prim size. For example, two 0.5 meter diameter spheres can't be linked if more than about 2.5 meters apart. For the exact figures, search for 'link limits' in the Building Tips forum. For your ship, you probably exceeded one of those limits. Which means that, perhaps, the bow end of the ship may need to be one linkset, while the stern is abother. It's not at all unusual for three and four story buildings to be split into linksets by floors, and possibly further divided into a West half and an East half, for example.

There is a maximum 30-metre radius linking range for primitives in SL. That said, smaller prims will have a shorter centre-to-centre linking range. Not much you can do about it other than work around the limitations.
Builders of large structures often make use of tools such as Bulider Buddy, Rez-Faux or Rez-Foo in order to circumvent the 30-metre linking limit.
As for vehicles (such as your boat) you can get around the link distance limitiation by linking your boat as several objects and then using Jesrad Seraph's excellent multimove scripts. Be sure to test your linksets at all rotations! Some linksets which are right at the 30-metre limit will fall apart when they are rotated to any angle off the XYZ poles.
