I've heard lots of stories about special techniques for building above 700 metres, but how high can you build normally?
It's getting very, very, very crowded in the sky around me, even though I'm 500m up, so I thought I'd try putting something up a bit higher. So, put up quite a simple self-built structure at 800m. No problem. Then at 900m and 950m. Still no problem.
So what is the problem?
BTW, this was a small but fully textured structure and everything seemed fine at every height. But, it was built much lower down.

you can rez at any altitude. but as for actual building, i.e. rezzing prims and positioning them, you can't do that above 768 meters. If you try to move a prim or a linked object that is above 768 meters using the client editing tools, the root of that item will immediately be sent down to 768 meters. I found this out the hard way when I tried to move my fully furnished house i had rezzed at 4096 meters.

I rez a garden platform frequently in the MG at 4090 meters, 4096 is max. You can not build at that height, only rez.

Normal building and SL play only works up to 768 M altitude. You can certainly rez something up to as high as 4096, but as soon as it changes in any regard, it drops back down to 768. Can't have a swinging or sliding door, etc.
