I've gone through several threads but couldnt find the answer to how do I build parts: a hat, a necklace, etc that I could add to my body/avatar.
Looks like I use the editing primitives. I've got there, but couldnt start drawing. Online SL help says "right click the land". I did it, but looks like this is for building a house, or whatever.
Having the primitives available for use, what should I do next for building the objects I might want to attach to my avatar.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Building a hat is the same as building a house, the only difference is when you are done designing the hat, you position it on your head and attach it to a free attachment point.

Prim parts for an avatar are usually built 'in-place' around an avatar standing on a pose stand, so the avatar doesn't move. You adjust the exact position after linking the parts and attaching them to an attachment point, then you detach the item and take it into inventory.

Simple example - a red fez.

Rez a cylander on the ground. Adjust the top size to 0.8 in both directions, and adjust the size to fit your head. Texture it to look like cloth, and color it red.

Name the object "my Fez", and take it into inventory.

Stand on a pose stand.

In inventory, locate the fez, and right click it, select "attach to" and a point on yout head, such as skull or right ear. (Note that prim hair is often attached to skull, so the ear is safer for a hat attachment point).

Adjust the position of the hat so it looks right.

Take it back into inventory.

Get off the pose stand.

Select the hat in inventory, right click and choose 'wear'. The hat should appear properly on your head.

For a cowboy hat, rez the fez on the ground, squash the fez a bit sideways, add an oval flat prim for a brim, link those parts, texture and color to suit.

Note that some points MOVE as you move! For example, a set of prim nipples might seem to be sensibly attached to the left and right pectoral attachment points. But if you do that, they will sink into and rise out of the chest as you move! You'd need to link the nipples as a unit and attach to the Chest attachment point, instead.
