I've built a model, only to find I can't link it all together. While the pieces are all physically touching, it still says Link failure.
When linking, does it matter if the objects are physically touching or is it that they have to be in a certain proximity of the the root prim?
If that's so, will setting my root prim to be more centered, allow the objects at either side to connect?
Or do I have to make my prims touch one another even more?

Objects don't have to be touching to be linked. The cause of the link failure is that the combined size is greater then the maximum size allowed of 30m.

Just to clarify a bit, that's 30M on center, not 30M end to end. You can link four 10M cubes flush in a row because their centers will be just 30M apart, even though the total "size" is 40M.
Also, there is sometimes a glitch in the linking system, causing objects that are actually not too far apart to act as if they are. If that happens, the best solution is usually to shift-drag the whole group to leave a copy behind, delete the original, and link the copies. Once prims get bugged, they stay that way, but the new copies usually will behave normally.

Once you exceed that 30 m distance limit for linking, you can use the Free Builder's Buddy scripts to keep linked sets in relationship to each other and to move the whole object around. Builder's Buddy, by Newfie Pendragon, in the Scripting Library /15/ff/96777/1.html
