Building Underwater

I'm trying to build a structure that will sit about 1/2 above and below the water line. Problem is the portion below the water line fills to the outside water level. I have seen underwater structures, so I am sure that the problem is some error on my part. Any help would welcome.

The Linden water level will be present no matter what you do (I can't even turn it off from the debug menu anymore...) You can build underwater, but having your structure be partially above the water line means you will see the water line inside the structure.

You can do some building tricks, such as creating a false floor to hide the water level, or just figure out a way to incorporate the water into the design of your structure.

Try going below deck on many big boats in SL. Most of 'em need to be bailed out!

It would be really nice if we could displace Linden water in some manner in SL, but it is impossible. The water plane is just that, a flat plane that goes from edge to edge in the sim, dead level, and everything below that plane is treated as being under water.

I've seen a few very creative builds where the "basement" level is actually a skybox. You take an elevator "down", and actually teleport UP to the flying basement.

Using an 'invisibility prim'

You can make it look like the bottom half doesn't have any water (just place a flat prim with the Invisibility Prim script/texture across the water level). However, the same effect renders the bottom half somewhat unuseable for avatars, as any avatar bodies become invisible through that prim as well. Also, anyone viewing from under the water will be able to see the water fog, with the invisiprim just adding water fog to everything ABOVE the water!
