How do I tell an object I have built where to attach itself when the user chooses "wear" instead of "attach"?
For instance, what makes a ring know to "wear" on a hand instead of a nose?
Thanks.

It's a hidden property on the object. Attach it where you like, rotate and position it so it looks good, then detach and it'll remember where it's supposed to be.

Most of the Time if you attach something to the correct position first, The object will remember this.... and rotation and such, unless someone attachs it to another position first.
This includes all copies of the object made from the one you set in the correct position. Try it with a cube and a friend, attach a cube to your hand and rotate it funn,, then pass it to your friend and have them attache it. |

The above answers are probabbly the best way of doing this, but if for some reason that can't be done (creating new prims, whathaveyou) then http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=llAttachToAvatar may prove usefull
