Making objects glow without creating light?

My avatar has a mane of fire and to be able to have it glow it has to be light prims. The problem is that it lets out too much light. I originally used particles as the fire but anything relating to alpha textures is automatically blocked out by the invsi-prim. I was hoping there was some little script or something that might be able to make it glow without lighting up the whole entire night...

There's a rather elegant hack to do this...

To visualize, make a cube. Find side zero (I think it's on the top). Color just the top side black, and then set the other sides to whatever color you want. Turn on the light property. Et voila, non-lighting light.
