Im trying to find out how to import an XML file to Maya, I've looked on the forums and can't seem to find much. Im trying to export a non-sculpted prim from SL and bring it into Maya so that I can do some baked lighting textures on it, and also bake a shadow texture for under the prim object.
So does anyone know how to get an XML into Maya, or XSI, or lightwave or anything. Or is there anyway to get an .obj out of SL?
I know that this is kind of a backwards way of doing things, but sometimes the hard-edged non-sculpted prims work better, and it would be nice to have to realistic lighting texture on them, especially something that has been twisted or deformed.
Thanks Lars

There are any number of ways to get Maya to pull data from an XML file. Here's one example: http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/mel_scripts/utility_external/import/xml-lib-mel-4008.htmlBut just so you know, you don't need the actual prims to do what you're trying to do. All you need to do is create similar geometry in Maya. I do it all the time. If you've got money to burn, you might want to check out SLTK Pro. It provides a 2-way conduit of sorts, between Maya and SL. http://www.simtools.jp/sltk/en/index.php

thanks chosen few.. I have already tried the link you provided and it doesnt seem to work with the lastest version of maya, 2009.
The only reason that I want to get prims out of SL is so that I dont have to recreate the whole building with in Maya. It would be simple easy geo to recreate, but the positioning would be off on the textures. Which is why I thought it would be much easier to import the prims.
Also, you mentioned this was not the place for this post, can you give me a link to where this post should be? These forums are usually a bit scattered and finding the correct place to post a questions sometimes isnt all that clear.
Thanks.

Sorry, typo. I was looking at both threads at once, and I edited the wrong one. I've now corrected it. This IS absolutely the right place for this.
In any case, I'm not sure what you mean about the positioning of the textures being off if you recreate the geometry. There's no reason they should be. Just make sure every surface has a perfect UV space, just like every prim face does.
Also, keep in mind, you don't need to divvy up objects into multiple prims in Maya in order to make it work. For example, if you've got a 40x10M wall in SL, it's going to be made of 4 prims, but in Maya, all you need is a single 40x10 surface. Then when you apply the texture in-world, simply set the repeats to .25 on each prim, and offset each one accordingly, to spread the single texture across all four.

Lars, check out Prim Composer. It will export prims that you own and are creator of to Maya. http://liferain.com/downloads/primcomposer/

Isn't Prim Composer for Max, not Maya? If there's a Maya version, I'd sure love to have it.

Is there also a solution for Maya (or Blender) or would the 3DSMax models then have to be converted to Maya?
If I read correctly, an (expensive) installation of 3DSMax is needed to use Primcomposer?

Ponk, have you ever gotten that script to work? It always fails every time for me. Adrian never quite finished it, as far as I know.
If you do have it working, what version of Maya, and what exactly did you do?

It worked with Maya 8 iirc. I don't think there was a lot of fiddling, well, any more than usual, but it's been a while.
