I'd like to announce the 1.0 release of Backhoe, a whole region terraforming tool. It is a Macintosh application that reads the 13-channel raw files that you can export and import if you own a whole region.

Details, screenshots, and downloads at:
http://www.notabene-sl.com/Backhoe/index.html

It is free and open source... Enjoy!

Very slick, Zarf! I've been thinking about doing something like this, as an adjunct to a grid database system I've built (which handles elevation data), but it probably wouldn't come out as nicely as yours. Too bad I don't have a Mac :)

I wonder if Terragen would be of use to you, since it runs on Windows PCs?

Backhoe looks good. I should finally have a Mac when I get my tax refund in February!

Search for "Heightmap" or "Terrain" Generator

If all you need is a 256 B+W heightmap, any terrain generator will do.
"Nem's Mega 3D Terrain Generator" makes terrains for games like Quake and Half-Life, and can export to .bmp
