I'm trying to make a rotating gear out of multiple prims, that I an link to an item that will then be attached to my avatar. I can't seem to get the entire gear to rotate though, just end up with the primary prim from the gear rotating. I'm a decent builder, but not so great with scripting, so any advice given will be great. This could be a building or scripting related question so hopefully this is the right place. Thank you all for any help.

If the gears are to be rezzed on a parcel, your best bet is to make each gear an individual linked object, then put the rotation/targetomega script in the _root_ prim of the linkset to make the whole gear rotate. Multiple gears in the same linkset, such as an attachment, are more difficult. It is nearly impossible to synch the rotations of multiple prims in a linkset. So, 1 prim gears are the way to go. The most common way to do it is to use simple cylinders as gears with gear textures with alpha. You can also either make or purchase 1 prim sculpted gears (I have some in my store )

I use them in all my clockwork builds.

single prims would be easier, but i would also like to make more unique items such as a crankshaft that requre multiple prims. I can make the multiple prims rotate, but then when i link that object to another object just the root or primary prim rotates on the original object. So still looking for a solution, I have seen it done without just using a texture or sculpie. This is driving me crazy trying to figure this out.

lol oh it can be done with multiple prims its just tricky.
you need to use dimpling on the center rod then using a tube make the handle. by applying a rotation script to each piece but absolutly make sure the scripts are turned off and reset so the prims go back to original possitions. then once you have them both off then use reset one more time then turn the scripts back on in the tools menu using turn scripts on this will activate a runtime which will simultaneously switch the scripts back on at the same time.
worse comes to worse sculpt the crank.
