Is it possible to use external tools to build SL objects? If so can anyone point me to a good tools set (Windows) to start with?

Search the forums for "Offline Builder" by Jeffrey Gomez and "Maya to Second Life" by Adrian Eisenberg. Just keep in mind the external tools are all pretty incomplete. Nine times out of ten, you'll have better results building inworld.
