I'm a bit confused - what program are you using? What are you trying to do exactly? What results are you getting in Second Life? Can you post a screenshot of how the toes stick together?

The way to think of the UV map for sculpties is as a square of latex rubber. You can stretch it over the model any way you like, but you can't cut it as you have done here. For something as complex as a hand, you'll probably find it easier to load one of the basic sculptie types such as a sphere and move the vertices to match the hand model. Think of the sphere as the latex sheet with two sides sewn together and the top and bottom gathered to points.

So there's two main approaches to modeling a sculptie. Stretching a prepared sheet of "latex" into the shape you want (ie modeling from a base sculptie) or moving UV points onto approprate places on the flat "latex" sheet (editing the UV map). For a hand I really think the first approach is easier.

If you really want to try to do it on the UV map, then you should see the finger tips on the map with concentric circles around them which are the fingers vertices. The poles would probably be the tips of the little finger and thumb and the seam would run around the edge of the base of the hand.
