does anyone know of a tutorial on doing organic shapes in SL? (specially animal shapes, but generic non-abstract/non-improvised organic shapes will also help)

The best advice I could give you on that is to collect a bunch of free or modifyable Furry avatars, and examine them carefully to see how they are built.
I believe I have a notecard from one furry avatar maker on how to customize their avatars. It may be useful to you. IM me in-world once the grid is back up, and I'll see what I can find for you.
