Ohhhh my.... big topic. Huge.
What program are you using to create them, first of all? It's not nearly as simple as just importing in a .obj file. Must fit certain limits, and be exported to a specific type of texture. So..what program? We can help a lot easier knowing the program than the file type, believe me. _____________________

Right now I'm using blender... very unskilled at it too.. I just want to see what I can do. The whole sculpty/import from blender has me twisted.. However this file was sent to me and its in .obj and I'm not sure how to use it. |

Here's a tutorial for blender..I only used it for sculpts once so can't really offer much insight personally. Here's this though, should still make sense and be usable, I believe.

There are only one or two generic .obj to sculpty importers, but since you're using Blender, I suggest reading the Blender threads in this forum. Blender is well supported in this forum.

.obj plugin for 3dsmax
07-23-2008 10:11
Heres is a useful plugin for the 3dsmax users with lower versions..which allows them to open higher 3dsmax model versions. Compliments of Rick (Chavez_US) from the Vietcong game

In my experience i suggest you go to work with Art of Illusion or Wings3D which i find much better suited for sculpty making when dealing with basic forms.
but for more control save one of the wings3D sculpty examples you get with the Import/Export plugin for secondlife sculpty .bmp and export it as a .obj and then import it into art of illusion for more advanced editing when your done just export back to a .obj file and re import to wings3D for file exporting to the sculpty. |

I just downloaded the free trial of 3dsmax and I really like it... once again the importing threw me.. maybe this might help me! I've also been watching the video tuts on importing blender VERY informative. I'm still keeping an eye on this thread. Thanks for all your help. |

any higher version (minus the Vray rendering) can use this import/export utility...which allows newer 3dsmax versions the ability to transfer files to older 3dsmax versions...eg 3dsmax 8 --> 3dsmax 6.

Off-topic: I miss the days when people still used my OBJ to prim importer.
![]() On-topic: There's plenty of mesh exporters to sculpties, but be advised of the hit to detail. For the best results, create a sculpty shape (or multiple) that approximates the mesh visually, then bake these as textures. Prim.Blender can be used to this end. In fact, I'd be honored if someone did so, and documented the process. ![]() (See sig link) _____________________
