I'm sorry to be so forum-search-challenged. Obviously what I need to know is already explained somewhere but I guess I need some help finding it.

I have read the "Permissions Explained" Sticky and it seems as if what I want to do should be possible.

I have a box. In the box are the components of a dress I made and want to sell copies of.
I want people who buy the box to be able to modify the prim skirt and be able to transefer ownership of their box, with its contents, to another person. I don't want them to be able to make copies of either the box or the contents.

But when I look at the permissions of the box in the edit mode screen the option for new owners to be able to resell their copy is darkened out. If I check "copy" then I can check or uncheck the resell box. But if I uncheck "copy" the resell box goes dark again.

Although the resell box is dark it looks like it is checked. But when my friend bought a copy of the box and then tried to give it to another person permission was denied. I know there must be something I'm missing but I can't figure out what.

By the way the exact same thing happens when I try to set the permissions for the prim skirt. I even tried setting permissions for the component prims but no luck thee either. And should I set the prim skirt "for sale" for $L0 since it is inside a box I am selling for a price?

I'll be rally greatful for any help.

Welcome to permissions confusion. Don't worry, you're not alone. Everyone gets baffled by this in the beginning.

The reason the "resell/give away" box is grayed out is because all items have to be either copyable or transferable. For some reason, you can't have neither. If you uncheck "copy", "resell/give away" gets automatically checked.

As for people not being able to give away the box, check to make sure all the contents are transferable. Objects inherit the most restrictive permissions from all their contents. That includes scripts inside objects, objects inside objects inside other objects, etc.

The most reliable way to pack a box is to put full perms on everything while it's still in your inventory. Then, after you've put the stuff into the box, change the perms for each item in the Contents tab on the editor window. After that, set the perms for the box itself.

Good luck.

Thanks so much. I did it exactly as you said, very carefully, and this time it worked.

I've got a separate issue but the same category (permissions):
Basically, I have a non-modifiable object containing a modifiable notecard. The idea for this is that someone can buy the object but not alter it's shape etc (this is mainly because of how incredibly easy it can be break). However, people who I give this item to aren't able to edit the notecards inside the object, it tells them it can't be modified.

Is this correct behaviour? I mean as you say, objects inherit restrictive permissions, but surely this would be of child items?
ie if an object within an object is no-copy, then the whole object would be no-copy. However, if a copyable object is inside a no-copy object, then the child (copyable) object should still be copyable.
This does not appear to be the case for notecards, on which I have given full-perms (notecard default). I'm thinking it may be because you can save a notecard, essentially 'modifying' the contents of an object, however, this seems very counter-intuitive, as it is still the same notecard inside the object, just with it's contents changed (and thus a new key).

Grrr, I expect it's probably down to a "that's just how it is for some reason" situation?
