Linking a big house

Hi,

I have built my first big house. I got carried away with it and its a lot larger than I originally intended. I cannot link the whole thing because it's too big I guess. When I try to link it all, it says that the objects are too far apart.

If I sell this house, how will my clients piece it together. If they just drop it, and it's not in the right spot and they try to take it without selecting it all, it will be messed up. So does anyone have a good solution for this problem?

TYVM!

Link all the pieces of the house into large sections so that it has as few "parts" as possible. Then select all the parts by using shift-click, or by drawing a selection box, and the right click and select "take". The whole thing will end up in your inventory as one packaged object. Give it a name and you're all set.

Your clients won't have to "put it together". As soon as they rez it, all the parts will be there. If they want to move it, they'll just have to make sure to select all the parts, or else they can just delete it and re-rez it. If you're really concerned, you could put follow scripts in the parts so that if one moves, they all move to catch up, but it's not really necessary.

what I do

what I do is make the floors of a bigger house the same size on the X and Y sections i.e 10x10... 7.5X7.5...ect then I link the house into equal sections and have them linked to adjacent floor prims of the 1st floor... thus it is easier for the end user to put the house back together if it should fall apart by simply ligning up the X.Y and Z axis... of course spacing out the X and Y axis acording to the distance the size is i.e part 1 is 10x10 at 100.500 on the x axis then part 2 would be at 110.500 on the X axis.
Also when I pack the house for sale I select all parts of the house together then take into my inventory and I make a note for the end user to go into edit mode BEFORE rezzing the house that way they can adjust the house to the level they want and rotation with all parts ligned up... to do this simply hit Ctrl 3 then rez and enjoy

Chosen,

Great explanation on something I've always wondered about.

/me saves this in a secure place for later.

Thanks!

As a simple followup to Chosen's post:

When you make sure your customers are in 'edit mode' (CTRL-3) when rezzing the house from inventory, all parts will be automatically selected and they can move it as one object.

You can also use Builder Tabs. They are extra prims which when everything is aligned, have pairs fully on top of each other. i.e. each part has one or more builder tabs and each adjascent part has a tab to aid in aligning. At the end a simple voice command removes the tabs.
