Cutting Doors Question

I need to make several small houses, and I am trying to save on prims. I can't seem to figure out how to make a cut in a flattened square such that it will produce an opening to put in a door.
I am flown about SL looking for a door cut in a single prim, but I haven't seen anything, and I looked at the cutting displays at the Ivory Tower.
Is there a way to cut into a prim to create a rectangle open on the bottom into which I can place a door? Can one prim support a door and some windows, or do they all have to be linked from separate parts.
Thanks in advance, and if you have any suggestions where to go to learn more--well, that's my thing.

You can get away with fake windows that are actually just alpha textures that allow you to look inside the house. The door, however, is a little more tricky.

You can hollow out the box and use cut begin-and-end to half the box so that it makes an opening in the bottom middle. But the size and shape of this opening is seldom what you want a door opening to be.

Yes, you can, but it's fiddly and ugly.
Hollow a prim. Then cut it to b 12.5 and (I think) e 67.5. Flatten and rotate. Not really great for a wall though.

Then it's about problem solving

Thank you both. I guess what I really wanted was validation that there is no real way to do this, so I will have to link together prims that allow me to create the opening.
I appreciate the feedbak. Thanks again.

There is no practical way to just cut an arbitrary hole in a prim. SL just doesn't support anything other than a centered hole, and then only on one axis.

You may want to look at one of my 9-prim Tudor Cottage starter homes for some ideas on how to do a fairly complicated looking build with fairly few prims. It's a 5M x 5M one-room cottage, with a thatched roof, a window that doesn't look like the wall is paper thin when you look through it, and a scripted, operating door. It's not very expensive, and you can feel free to tear it apart and see how I cut back on prim use.

I have vendors in Serenity Woods, Kitsune, or in Furnation Skymall, or you can buy it on SL Boutique.

Why, thank you, Ceera

Yes, tearing apart things is a very good way to learn how to build. Thanks for the idea, and I probably will invest the Lindens in a cottage. After all, just how many more prim hairdos do I need? ;-)

About 7,328 just to be accepted in SL society ... :p

Any time, DrFran. By the way, if you do purchase one of my Tudor Cottages, and if it doesn't have the scripted door, please IM me in-world, and I will send you a free upgrade on the door. I think I updated that product in my vendors, but I am not in-world right now, and I am not certain that I got all of the locations. The script in the door is a freebie from the script library, and you're welcome to re-texture the door and re-use it in your builds.

Here is what it looks like:

Ways to create a 1 prim wall with door:

1. Create a prim larger than the rest of the walls. (say you have 5m high walls, then make a 10m wall. Make a hole in it, then cut it at 0.375, 0.875. This will produce a hole at the 'bottom'
It will be not 'door' shaped though. You can make it more doorshaped by actually increasing the cut, and 'hiding' the extra parts in the bottom of your build. (cut .250,.750, reduce height to align the top with the rest of the walls.

2. Making an arbitrary door hole in a wall, can only be done using textures and scripts.
A technique I use is a combination of alpha based wall+door textures, and a non alpha version with the actual door in place. (or use a single texture with both variations on each half). Then switch the display when somebody wants to enter, and turn the wall phantom using a script. On a linked build, this also requires you to unlink/link the specific prim temporarily.

You can see both variations in my prefabs area in Damania sim. (Click sig)
