I just started the game, and I'm trying to figure out how to make more complex models, how do I combine the prims to do so?

Welcome Vampe! Check out Teazers -- they have some fun building classes, from basic to advanced.

Take things apart!
04-05-2006 20:34
One thing that I found really helpful when I was learning to build was to take apart already built things to see how they're put together. For instance, when I wanted to build a house for my hillside lot, I first got a simple house from a free collection and set it up at a sandbox, then started making changes. The final result looked very different from the starting point, but it contained a lot of lessions that I had learned from the original.
This method of learning requires that you have a full-permissions version (or at least copy/modify; transfer is optional) of whatever it is you want to learn how to build. That will be easy to accomplish for some items. Houses and simple vehicles, for instance, are readily available for free in the usual places. In other cases, you may need to buy an example of the type of item you want to build; prim hair is an example. (Make sure to select a copy/mod one; best of all is if it's a style you also like to wear, so you're not investing any money just for the learning experience.) Certain classes of items will be difficult; prim shoes, for instance, all seem to be no-mod.
Don't be afraid to go wild! Resize, reshape, change the colors and textures. If you completely botch things, just delete the whole mess and rez a new copy.
Shameless plug: if you want a free house to tear apart, my Dreams Challenge House is available at the Bazaar, on SL Boutique, and at some other locations. Absolutely free (you'll have to pay the vendor L$1 if you buy in-world, but you get it back), full permissions, and it even includes most of the textures used.

In world, go to FIND and either EVENTS or PLACES and type in Teazers -- you'll see their schedule of classes and events

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives yet.
Vampe, if you haven't been there already (plugging "Ivory Tower" into Find should do the trick), you should go, and poke around the sections devoted to each prim type. It won't usually directly help you with knowing what prims you need to combine to make what shape, but it does have examples of what different prims look like when they're cut, hollowed, sheared, etc., as well as explanations for what the prim parameters handle.
I second the recommendation to take classes, and I also recommend just experimenting. If you happen to make a shape that you like or think will be useful later, think about naming it and taking it into your inventory.

You can also go to a "sandbox" (FIND menu to find one) and watch other builders working on projects. Often, you can ask someone who is building and he/she will explain some of what is going on. I learned by a friend showing me some of the basics and then read and reread the forums, visited the Ivory Tower and basically just got my hands dirty playing.
One nice thing is that if you start building something and mess up, you can delete. On the other hand, save a copy to your inventory periodically if you are working on something big or intricate.

From: Vampe Omegamu I just started the game, and I'm trying to figure out how to make more complex models, how do I combine the prims to do so? You can link prims together to form objects that act as one "piece," with some lmitations. But as long as they're not too far apart and you're not building a vehicle, just select all the prims and choose "Link" from the Tools menu.
