For those who are so inclined, "Today is an important day in the 23 year history of trueSpace. We are releasing a major upgrade to our flagship product with trueSpace7.6, bringing significant improvements in modeling, animation, rendering and workflows, plus new direct export to Virtual Earth. Most of these you might already expect if you've been following my regular Captain's Blog posts at http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=893. What you may not expect is that we are making trueSpace7.6 available to everyone at no charge, in a giant step forward to bring high-end 3D authoring tools to all who want them!" You need to register to access the download. But this is worth it, not a trial. The last time i checked the price on this I thought it was too expensive, but I still salivated over what it appeared to be able to do. Heck at this price you cant beat it!

Totally uber.
I haven't played with tS since version 3. Can't wait to give 7.6 a spin just to see what they done with it.

Just downloaded it. Apparently it's only for Windows? Fortunately I was on my Windows system when I tried, but is there a Mac version?

Anyone here have any experience using Truespace for Second Life? Now that it's free how does it rank with the other freeware that's available?

Caligari was bought by Microsoft a few months ago, so don't count on there ever being a Mac version MS did something like this when they bought Creature House too, making Expression free while they assimilated it into their graphics suite.

From: Viktoria Dovgal It's just for Windows. Caligari was bought by Microsoft a few months ago, so don't count on there ever being a Mac version. Thanks. I kind of figured that was the case, as I didn't see any platform choice when I went to their site to download a copy. I can do it on Windows if I must, but most of my creative apps are on my Mac, which is a far better system. Guess at some point I'll have to pop for VM Ware and a copy of Windows, so I can run both OS versions on my Mac, and copy and paste between them.

This is great news! I have looked at the software before but was allways turned off by the price tag.
Thanks for the tip Infiniview!

Ahh Truespace. I used TS 3 back in the 90s and remember it fondly. One of my first paying 3d gigs was done with TS and Bryce 2.
/gets far away look.
Anyway, it looks like MS are making it their virtual earth modeler like Google's SketchUp is for Google Earth, except it has been developed much longer and has most of the features of enterprise level 3d apps. Back in the day the plugin SDK was open, if this is still true TS could be a viable sculptie creation platform.

Wow, I totally missed that. Looks like it could go that way. I just went into a couple of "rooms" since I just installed TrueSpace. You don't have an avatar, but there is first person view mode. I didn't see anyone else in the "spaces" to interact with. Right now it looks more like a 3D tool with a persistent online collaborative workspace than something like SL, or even Lively.
