Joints should not be used. They will not work on attachments. They are being removed in the next version in anycase. For hinging at the ankle I would actually recommend you use two pieces. One that attaches to your foot, and one to your lower leg. Good luck .

Has any one ever found hinges useful here in SL?

If they had worked the way I had expected them to then they would have been very very useful. My experience in trying to use them was to create some thing that felt like it had an elastic band attached to it. What were there intended function? I never even try and use them any more and will not miss them going.
However if they get replaced with new hinges that work ,I will be a very happy bunny.

Hinges were very useful to me at building theme park rides and other cool physical displays. I hate LL that they removed hinges, even if they had quirks, itches and a few major annoying bugs, if you avoided them they worked perfectly fine. It is just important to avoid moving the minor hinged linked prim manually or with llSetPos. Even if the majority think that they were very broken another small group found them vital for their builds like some theme park rides. Or at building a cool solar system which moves physically around with planets ( sigh..i will miss that build). If you followed a few set of rules they worked perfectly fine.
I am really disgusted that they removed them.
