What is the best Building School?

Hiya!

I've done a lot of exploring in SL, enjoyng other people's creations and content -and now I figure its time to add some of my own. I've been thru the House of Primitive, but being one of those "analog" mentalities - I tend to do better with a "live" instructor and a classroom setting. I've noted several of those in SL, but I was wondering if some of the experienced builders on this forum could point me at what they consider the 'best" place for a n00b like myself to learn the craft.

I'm really interested in home creation at this point, but the fascination with vehicals is already growing too. I'll leave mobile consturction for later tho - I need to get up-to-speed on things that stay put before I work on something that will go careening thru the skies of SL :-)

IF it's still there..the Library of Primitives is great...

It was built by Lumiere Noir, but don't see him on too much anymore. The incredible build has visual examples of how to do this and that and tons of notecards to help you out.

There are more games in SL than classes, but classes do occur. Just have to keep you eye on the event calendar. Sometimes you have a good instructor, sometimes not. Best way to see if you're going to be taught halfway decent methods of building is to check to see what the instructors themselves have built. If they've never built a house or a tree, I wouldn't go to them to learn how to do those things. Makes sense.

Unfortunately the very talented ppl in SL who may also be financially successful at building/creating AND selling a certain type of thing may be too busy to teach regular and frequent classes. I encourage those ppl to do occasional classes. Trust me, if Baron Grayson or Nephilaine Protagonist EVER decided to teach a class here and there, the only problem is that they'd probably bring down the sim.

I specialize in water design..ie, waterfalls etc... and enjoyed doing a set of classes several months ago. I'm going to try to hold a set of 2 classes when I can, usually every few months. Have a set of classes coming up on Dec 3rd in Nautilus and on Dec 10th in Avalon. I'm giving out a tuturial which I usually charge for for free day of the class. Has really user-friendly explanations of how to do BASIC SL design/building as well as falls, rivers, lakes etc. You're more than welcome to come by and pick up a copy.

Yanno, maybe a good idea, if it could be organized, would be sort of a potluck class.

Get some people who know a bit about the various areas, and have them share their knowledge together.

nother good idea...would be to see who's builds you are drawn to...then I would drop them a message and see if I could just observe them working for a few days...and if they would be open to questions while they work...some won't do it, but many will...

hmmm, I may try that myself. :)

I've seen several different building styles...you should really take a look at 'em all.

Myself? I joined SL for building. And bein' the independent type...I STILL haven't looked at any tutorial or class. I just started rezzin' prims and building one day (day one, minute one) and haven't stopped.

The way you phrased this is truely marvellous. What a beautiful first post to these SL Forums, and I warmly welcome you. :D

What great advice has already appeared here!

A good setting can be an intimate one that isn't necessarily formally scheduled ahead of time, but there is a dearth in SL of intimate Master-Apprentice relationships. I've had friends who learned by going to the sandboxes, seeing someone build kewl schtuff, ask a few questions, and that was literally the foundation of a beautiful friendship to come. Collaborations, great creations followed. I find that's the way it can work in SL... you really get to know and like someone as a person, and those vibes affect you—creatively and more.

There is a certain degree of intuition involved, which may arise when you describe what you already like in Second Life, and see where A and B and even X and Y lead to.

Would sure be an interesting idea to have a "Shaolin School of Building".

A good thing, Josie, is you already sound like you know what you wanna do!

Hi all,

I am in the same position as Josie. I would even be willing to pay, a reasonable amount, to someone for a few classes and pointers to get me started.

Anyone know of anybody providing such services?

Thanks.

Thanks to Art Laxness who just gave me an excellent tutorial on the basics of building.

And for free too. :)

Josie, if you still need help, look him up.

Where can I find this lesson and notes?

I'd love to know where this house and notes can be found. Thank you so much.

in the find/places blank inworld...then teleport to Noyo/its location.

My upcoming classes the next 2 saturdays will help newbies and oldbies learn water things...but they ALWAYS are there too to help someone just make a box hehe and isn't that where we all start !! And the 'classes' are extra-long , 2 hours, not to cover a lot of things really...but just to make sure everyone goes slow, easy...and gets their questions answered :))

I'll be teaching how to do the boxes and other shapes...how to stretch them to the size you want..color/texture them..play with those textures...and a lot more. So, yes, basics will be there. But you know..lol..SL design has never seemed that 'basic' to me either. It's a challenge isn't it?

The more experienced builders will probably just dig in and put up some wonderful waterfalls on the tiny makeshift mountains already placed on Nautilus..and so...you'll not only learn MY techniques, but perhaps theirs as well just by looking.

AND your plywood box will get an 'A' as well as the most superb falls! I'm an easy teacher. :)

However you learn BEST..by watching, by doing..or by reading a book in a corner all by yourself...hehe...it'll be there for you....so a few months from now YOU will be teaching your OWN innovations and ways to do things differently in SL.

Happy building!

the class times are.......
11-30-2005 16:42
1pm linden time this Saturday and the next Saturday, December 3rd and 10th :)

The first one..this Saturday will be held in the big sim called Nautilus.

You can get there by typing in Nautilus on your map. If you try to find the event in the events listings you will not have the correct teleport location on it due to fine points of holding events. SO... type in 'waterfall' in CLASSIFEDS..you WILL be able to teleport directly to either class by clicking on the 'teleport' tab when you use this area.

AND if all else fails...ie, you're saying to yourself..'forget it, I'm getting confused already' hehe...just IM me..and I'll tp you. I'll be there very early dusting up, say around 11 AM messing around with prims/building :) SO if you want a REALLY long day..lol..you can join me then.

The second class, the one on Dec 10th, will be held on Avalon and the same teleport suggestions apply.

On Saturdays during the day, we take our 3 year old Grandson out for a few hours. It will be right smack when you have class :-( Is there any possibility that you will ever hold an evening class? I'm on eastern US time. Just couldn't hurt to ask. I HATE to miss this.

I had to edit this because I forgot to thank you for taking the time to post this to me. Hugggggggggggggs

Trying to get Asian/Euro folks a chance to have a class before they nod off, that's why I make the classes more midday Linden time.

Would 8pm est do...ie, 5pm linden time? Might involve more of the Cali folks, too. And, that would give me a few hours between classes to clean up a bit and take care of my rl/slow as it is at the moment. Yeah!! hehe

There might be less or more of a turnout, or some really avid learners staying over. But I think it's more than doable. It's also a good way to see if certain times are better for the SL folks in general.

But..ONE of the ways you can thank me for doing the classes is to hold one or two yourselves. You don't have to be a 'linden instructor' to do so either. BUT you do have to own at least 512 m2 of land OR be part of a group that does. The great thing here is that you don't even have to use your own or that group's land...if you search for an SL philanthropist who will donate use of his/her land for the class. So, after you have all the basics down..teleporting, looking up things in listings, 'building'/using SL software to design, have a small class here and there. Even if you become a 'hit' and folks 'know who you are' lol. And don't be discouraged by small turnouts..the 'fear factor' often comes into play when people see the word 'class' hehe

Anyway..I'm going to post the SECOND class time for THAT DAY, Dec 3, as 8pm est/5pm Linden time for the time being. (There will still be a class on Dec 10th in Avalon) Hope this is good for you, if not..notify me inworld or 'inforum' :)

This time is great but... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
12-01-2005 15:52
Oh I know I'm a royal pain the you know what...LOL! These next two weeks the only time I have on a Saturday night is late eastern, like around 10ish. I KNOW that's late for most ppl, and please don't think I'm expecting you to change things for me...no... But if up until the holidays you can have just one late class on a Friday or Saturday night that would be great! Meanwhile I need to shop for this massive family I have....most of them are in New Jersey, and I'm in Virginia...LOL! Anyway, YES I'd love to commit to having a class in the FAR future...after I know what I'm doing. And again, thank you so much for taking the time to figure things out in my and other ppl's behalf, and also to write back :-)

While I'm no where near being a good teacher or anything like that I do large builds like clubs and malls often...and anyone wanting to come watch while i'm working and ask any questions you may have, I'm more than happy to help.

The later class will be ending around 10 est...so..try to make it around that time.. there may be some ppl still messing around with building :)

As for me, I have to go to work early Sunday, so can't really stay up later..sorry :(

Again, you're welcome to grab an 'urn'..for free..it has a tutorial that has a lot of explanatons of how to do the basic building things in sl...then goes on to the more specific water builds.

Wow, this only emphasizes how much ppl love to learn in SL and in general. Please do try the Library Tower of Primitives in Noyo, and an occasional sandbox trip may help too !

If anybody needs some help, and I happen to be around, I'd be happy to help. Just IM me inworld. I don't enjoy formalized teaching or spoonfeeding people. I'd rather have someone who already has some problems to solve they have in mind come over and ask how to do things.

I'm also in the process of building/thinking up a school / tutorial area inside some kind of themed building, most likely a broken warehouse of some sort.

Good luck!

I do get shy about this sort of thing, but I have a definite interest in learning the most effective way to build houses and objects. It would be interesting if there was a sandbox that was dedicated to specifically helping each other out...

I wouldn't mind teaching a class but it has to be something I'm infatuated with at the moment and something that I think people would be interested in learning. One thing I'm very interested in, and have been exploring while not designing, are inworld photo sessions that do not require importing into PSP or Photoshop for editting. Wha I mean is that the lens flare, filters, and other special effects are recreated here and set up around the models before taking the shot.

It's most certainly not the same as building..and quite honestly I don't know if I would have the patience to teach a beginning builders class. People will do better with a teacher that isn't tapping impatiently for everyone to catch up.

Margot mentioned that I probably wouldn't be able to teach regularly and she's quite right but I do have interest. Maybe teaching once a month wouldn't be bad. I suppose I should find out first if I can stand to teach ....and then if people can stand me teaching. lol

Now that sounds highly interesting. I do hope you will teach a class about that sometime.
