I was thinking about the possibility of adding some sparse wildlife to the Outlands - nothing too complex. The idea struck me while walking across campus and seeing a whole lot of rabbits and squirrels doin' their thing. However, I must admit I'm not quite yet acquainted with all the commands I'd need in order to make the little critters properly sensitive to their environment. Critters would be sensitive to:
  1. Presence of water and/or trees (to restrict motion)
  2. Presence of secondlifers (maybe just a sound)
  3. Presence of obstacles (so they don't wander through walls)
  4. Lay of the land (so they walk realistically)
  5. Presence of other critters (maybe)
  6. Secondlifers shooting at them? (hunting? maybe)

The AI need not be all that sophisticated. Just something background to dart around and catch people's interest Wonderland-style. They need not mate, nest, feed. They should interact somehow with secondlifers though. No use getting someone's attention only to show them just another object. Which brings me to the Barking Spiders Project.

We could make bunnies, foxes, squirrels, cats, what have you. But they are timid and run away from people. What fun is that? Now a couple of knee-high spiders that looked for people, lurked about a moment, "barked", jumped up, and ran off - now that would add some levity. :) They'd be indigenous to the Outlands, and I'd only make a few so they wouldn't get annoying. People could, of course, pick them up and place them strategically - or maybe even purchase them if they felt so inclined ^_^

Anyone up for helping me put some mischevious wildlife in the Outlands?

Not quite sure if wildlife should go in the outlands...but, you should put some up in the new camping area of De Haro :)

Wow! In truth, I hadn't even considered how appropriate the location was. In retrospect, my support for putting critters in the Outlands is summarized in the following deductively strong argument:

Premise 1: I live in the Outlands.
Premise 2: I like critters.
Premise 3: Having things I like where I live makes me very happy.
Lemma: Having critters in the Outlands makes me very happy.
Premise 4: If a thing makes me very happy is the bestest thing in the whole world for EVERYONE.
Conclusion: Having critters in the Outlands is the bestest thing in the whole world for EVERYONE.

Admittedly, Premise 4 is a bit weak. :D Though, I guess location of critters can be determined later. People will probably pick 'em up and fly 'em to where they live. This raises the possibility of having PETS! Go out to some area and nab a barking spider, slap a leash on it, give it a bed in yer house, and call it Fifi. (I'm assuming people know what a 'barking spider' actually is.)

Incidentally, I found that all the appropriate commands were indeed thoughtfully included in LSL. (llSensor, etc.) So scripting won't be a problem. Anyone wanna help me design some critters?

I've been thinking about wildlife myself. All the other criteria you mention sound feasible, but a realistic walk poses problems, I think. The scripting language isn't intended to support that type of animation yet.

I'll volunteer to design the SL version of the pet rock... :)
