If its free, take a copy to a sandbox.
PUt down a platform of 10x10m cubes (lets say, 9 of them in a 30x30 square.
Drop it on the platform to REZ it, and reduce the size of the platform's prims on the edge to find how big it must be.

If its for SALE, read the notecard on the wall, or touch the vendor machine. It should tell you, "fits a 25x15m plot" for example.

Be sure to allow a little room around the edges so you can walk in and out without going through the neighbor's house.

The third dimension is prim count. a 117 prim house with "fits on first land!" is *technically* not false advertising.

thank you for the help. I will try the 10m prim board thing. might make one and keep a plank in inventory to measure as I look around.

There's a much simpler method than laying out all those boards (for objects you own, anyway). Simply rez the house, select the whole thing, and then hold down ctrl and shift. You'll see three numbers appear at the top center of your screen. Those are the X, Y, and Z dimensions of your selection.

Also, so you know, holding just ctrl without shift will show you the rotation of the selection.

For objects you don't yet own, you can use the same method, just with a little twist. Rez two cubes at opposite corners of the building. Select them both, and hold ctrl+shift. You'll see the total size of the selection box at the top of the screen, just as if you had selected the building itself. If you want to also measure the height, place a third cube at the top of the building, and do the same thing.

There's never any cause to lay out dozens of prims just to take a measurement. Three is the most you ever need.
