Can someone tell me how to combine objects to make one piece. For example, I'd like to a flower pot filled with dirt. I can make the pot and the dirt but I'm not sure I can put combine the two so that it looks like the dirt is in the pot.
I really appreciate the help!

The term in SL for what you're asking about is "linking". Select all the prims by shift-clicking each one. Press ctrl-L. Done.
If you want to unlink them, press ctrl-shift-L.
Note that when you link objects together, whichever one you select last becomes the parent prim, and all the others become its children.
