By going up?
There is no such thing as space. It's just a nickname we give to really high altitudes. People go there because there are semi-interesting bugs that happen at high altitudes. Like, colors changing, the sky disappearing, your eyes popping out of their sockets... _____________________

how do you get to space? Put on your astronaut suit and practice, practice, practice. Space is right above Carnegie Hall. Sorry, couldn't resist that one. ![]() _____________________

Space can be reached with a variety for flight augmentation devices available. There are interesting visual effects at high altidues, but there are more intersting thing up there than that. The behavior of prims and objects changes with atitude, creating several zone. From 0 to 768 meters, all object, attachments and scripts can be created and work normally. From 768 to about 4000 meters primas can not be created, bit things created at the lower level can be move here. Past this level, objects are returned to thier owners. Past this mark, only avatares and attachments can go.
There are several reports of extream altitudes, one to 2 million meters. Other reports talk of interuptions to flight at lower altitudes. The following thread talks about some experiments in construction techniques at high altitudes. /8/9e/41118/1.html |

I've been up to about 2 million meters high before, but I assume it goes on for BILLIONS!!! That is becuase even at 2 million meters high, the "ceiling" still seems to go on forever! Hopefully, one day, space will be made, and a moon, and maybe we can have a new object material resistant to the sun, and we can live on the sun! Maybe the center of the SLEarth, the material there could be that stuff they use in The Core.

how do you get to space? Then there's the pseudo space deal, where a crafty builder has designed a rich space environment inside a large build, sort of like a planetarium. There was a fine one in Phobos (though it was gone last time I visited), and Tiger Crossing made a nice "trip to the moon" ride (I forget exactly where.... I'm a lot of help, huh?). There's currently a cool "trip to jupiter" ride in the fair at Fairchang, complete with a splashdown when you "return" to earth. Speaking of SL space, any truth in the rumor I heard that the "walls" of sl space converge together as they rise up... or if avitar X and avitar Y head straight up from different ground locations that they'll eventually meet? _____________________

I have it on the authority of one-who-is-no-longer-here who took that ride. At 16 million meters, he claims, the spatial characteristics of SL do converge to a single point. However, since there is some "fuzziness" to the parameters of this point, it's possible for an avatar to "move through", sometimes. The extreme physics and draw distortion beyond the point make the area behave like a solid two-dimensional surface. One can "walk" the sky up there, and there doesn't seem to be an end to it. The problem is getting back through the point to the SL side. You can't. All you can do is relog. He claims the effects on the "sky-side" of the point are really fascinating. |

That'd be funny if the point expanded or wormholed into an alternate SL universe. Not probable, but funny. _____________________

This thread answers alot of questions that have been bugging me recently. Such as: why does my airplane keep on disappearing when i'm flying at altitudes above 1000 metres? It's mostly likey i've hit something that hasn't quite rezzed cos i was moving too quickly. But if i am to understand Tommy Oz's post correctly that would imply that there are already a significant amount of structures between the 768 metre level and the 4000 metre ceiling. Such as 'sub-orbital' platforms, skyboxes and the like.
I discovered the 4000 metre ceiling by accident. I built my own plane and took it out for a test run. I put it in a steep climb at full throttle heading east from luskwood. It wasn't long before my plane disappeared leaving me falling thru the sky with a little notice from SL stating that my plane had gone out of SL at co-ords blah,blah,4095 and was returned to my lost and found folder. I assume from Tommy Oz's statement that if i parked my plane in hover mode at 3995 metres i could continue on upwards using a 'jet-pack' as it would count as an attachment. |
