I understand adding textures to objects, but is there any way to add textures to land? My searches have come up empty.

Texturing land can only be done by the sim owner or their designated estate managers, on private island sims. It is solely based on applying fairly small tiled textures to one of four altitude bands, which can get skewed at each corner of the sim. The choices affect the entire sim, without exception. There is no fine control or parcel level control, and no way to apply a non-tiled texture to a specific area.

On the Mainland, only LL is allowed to change terrain texture choices, and they virtually never do after the sim is put on line.

The only way to simulate finer control is to apply terrain textures to prims, and cover the real terrain with those prims.
