Do textures have to be a certain size like 512 x 512, or a certain format like .jpg, .gif, etc, or does anything go?

Head on over to the texturing forum, and read the big orange sticky at the top, entitled Textrure Size, Pixel Counts, Video Memory, and File Formats.
