So I have started a new line of prefabs.. with the idea of famous landmarks from pop cultural as thier inspiration..

First up was the Warehouse from Reservoir dogs..that about 75% of the movie was shot at

Second up is the Green Mile cell block E...
this movie really touched me.. so I wanted to do it justice.. so i recreated the entire build.. I did do some shortcuts because in the end it is a prefab and not a work of art. But I think the build is pretty good.

so.. im looking for ideas .. the idea is i want somthing that Is not in SL currently (so no scarface mansion ideas) but somthing that when people see it. can immediatly recognize it.. if they sell thats great but I am doing this because im tired of seeing the same 10 buildings in SL over an over again.. and figure there has to be sombody out there doing somthing different.

I don't normally do this..but.. if it is your line of prefabs...you should come up with the ideas. Plain and simple. Otherwise you're selling someone esles ideas.. and thats not nice....

I must (respectfully) disagree, Okiphia. I do a lot of replica work myself. In many ways, it's a lot more challenging than doing original work (everyone knows if it looks wrong, for starters), and it absolutely involves the same degree of creativity. Figuring out how to make items in SL look just like their well known RL counterparts can be quite the exercise in creative problem solving. It's wonderful mental exercise, if nothing else.

As far as the ethics are concerned, you certainly have a point, but I'd invite you to consider also that many look at fan art as a high form of tribute. The amount of skill and close attention to detail that goes into a replica can be interpreted as a sign of extreme respect from a fan. This is a very different thing from copyright/trademark infringement, in my opinion.

Ultimately, the question of whether any particular replication is right or wrong, I believe, is up to the creator of the original. If the set designer of The Green Mile has a problem with someone building a replica of what was shown in the movie, then I think it would be best to leave that one alone. It would be hard to imagine he would though.

Many would argue that in the absence of a specific declaration that it's OK, you must assume it's not. And were we talking about copyright or trademark concerns, they'd be right. I really don't think the same holds true for what we're talking about though. Once something becomes part of popular culture, I think it takes on a life of it's own that can't remain entirely under the original creator's control. I think people have a right to their own notion of fandom, just as creators have a right their IP, and there has to be a respectful balance there. As long as both sides are appreciative of each other, and neither side does anything illegal, I think it's all good.

Speaking of legality, by the way there's no legal way to stop something like what Flix is doing, even if the original creators were to object. You can't copyright a movie set. With things like Cheers bar or the Ghostbusters firehouse, the logos on those are certainly trademarked and should NOT be used without express permission. But the buildings themselves are just buildings, no matter what their significance in popular culture. Those cannot be restricted. So leave the logos off (painful as that may be), and legally there's no problem.

That's how I see it, anyway. Feel free to disagree.

I have some ideas that i am going to do (i was tettering on the idea of the munsters house with the staircase and spot but doing it all in black an white just because i think the color'd version wasnt as .. omnious) and the other idea was mabye pee wee's playhouse.. But I also was doing a poll to see what you guys would like to see.. as far as selling them.. the only reason I am selling them is just to make back the uploading cost since I normally design about 95% of my own textures.. as you can see my prices for a prefab are very low.. i am not looking to get rich.. just enjoy building and create somthing that isnt the exact same 10 buildings over an over.

One other thing is.. I am doing most of these builds just because I really love the movies and would like to see them recreated. I wanted to do the shinning hotel.. but relized that logisitcally its just imposslbe i could do all the rooms an hallway easily but to make it look right it would take 10k prims.. and A) itwould never sell.. and B) i dont have the room to build somthing that massive :P

but I welcome any critisim

Not quite what I meant.. I didn't mean don't do replicas.. sure do replicas, thats fine and all.. (When legal of course) What I meant.. was come up with the idea to do a specific replica yourself. If you are trying to make a new line of prefabs... then you should have ideas for them. You shouldn't ask people for ideas... Think about it this way:

I'm making a line of prefabs, my own design, all of them. My own ideas. When someone comes along and asks me for an idea for a build, I'm not going to give them one of my ideas, because that is me losing potential customers, or losing the originality of the idea, especially if they come along and use my idea, while I'm already working on it... if somsone asked me 'Whats your new build idea?" I wouldn't tell them for that same reason..then its not my idea according to the general public if it's done by that person first.

If that made any sense either lol

exactly, you need to find out what the market wants
what sense would it make to build something that may not sell, when you can ask around get an idea of what might sell...

good marketing :)

best advice? watch some tv.... popular shows, new and old, look for something that's different than everday life, these are eycatchers (example, the house from Roseanne, boring, everyone has houses, the bar from cheer... eh maybe because the layout is unique, the addams family house, definately uniqe)

just beware, buyers of these items are going to want LOTS of details, and will gripe about the smallest inconsistencies, especially fantasy/SF builds
