How do I link objects together?
I have tried SHIFT & CLICK but it wont stay together.

The easiest way for me is to click on one of prims in the set that you want to link together and then while that prim is selected lasso the whole set so that all the prims in the group are highlighted white, then go to the tool menu and select link.
If you want a specific prim to be the prime prim then before you link the set but after you have lassoed and selected all the prims, hold the shift key down and right click the prim you want (that deselects it), then right click it again to make it the last prim selected (that will be the prime prim), then link from the tools menu.

Select the prims then use Control-L
Control-Shift-L unlinks.
Be aware of your root prim.
