Make it like a coffee shop / bar crossover. Make it heel at heel - lot sof dirty textures. And lots of books. A stage, a microphone, and banner advertising the latest event. Um, a couple of cats?
I think with these sort of functions it's the people and their art that gives it the feeling. No empty room will be recognisably a poetry venue.
Hwoever, on a related note, take a look at Shakespeare and Co. It;s a recreation of a famous Parisien bookshop. They have readings and the like.
