"left click to open" object property not working reliably

I want someone to be able to left-click my object and be automatically presented with a "Object Content" window and then select the "Copy and Wear" button.

I built a container object, gave it full perms / anyone copy, and set "When left-clicked" attribue to "Open" action.

I then create a single prim object with full perms and anyone copy attributes and put it into the container object.

When I left click the container then sure enough I can see my pointer change to a "open box" icon and after clicking I get the contents menu I want. Great.

But, whe I log in with my alternate avatar who is not in the same group as the created object they do not get the "open box" icon and it doesn't open when they left click it. Editting the container object shows the single prim content object to be ";(no copy)(no Midify)" for some reason. I checked the perms again and they are full access. If my non privilidged AV takes a copy of the container box and re-rezzes it then sure enough he has full perms and access, as expected, and the box works properly. Why won't it work properly when the box is owned by a different group?

I tried taking the container box and resezzing it and resetting the perms but to no avail.

Is there any way to make this work? What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for any advice.... I'm exasperated!!!

When you set the permissions on the object you're trying to give away, did you rez it on the ground and change perms there, or did you change them in your inventory? Perm changes made in inventory become effective the next time the object is rezzed. That can lead to some confusion if you think you have already made an object full perm.

I'm not sure why the group tag is making a difference. I'm not sure I understand, though. You asked "Why won't it work properly when the box is owned by a different group?" Did you actually deed the object to a group, so you are no longer the owner? If so, and if the perms on the object you're trying to give away aren't set the way you think they are, maybe your problem is there. I'm really just grasping at straws.

inconsistent perms seen between owner and others
10-11-2009 18:08
Yes, I rezzed the object on the ground and made all the perm changes there before taking it into myinventory and then dragging it inot the container objects content tab.

I noticed that as the non-priviledged AV the perms are seen as ";(no modify)(no transfer)" and not what i said before. regardless, when I edit the container object, go to content tab and examine content prim's properties then I can see they're all checked even though they're grayed out.

The object (container and content) is shared with group and the 'object open on left click' seemed to work with other group members but when I added my non priviledged AV to the group the contained object appears to have ";(no transfer)" and when I click on the container and choose "copy and wear" it actually fails with a "no permitted to copy that inventory" message. So the this left-click to open and copy/wear only appears to work for my avatar! But I've seen this work for others and have no idea what I could be doing wrong.

I'm certain it's to do with this inconsistent view o fthe contained object perms... to me they look full perm but to others they don;t ... if I could fix that inconsistency then I think everything else would work properly.

Cna anyone help with this problem?

Thanks again,

I've sent you things + instruction, but you aren't on line.

I sent you a script plus an example I made that does what you want.

Copy and Wear for oners only?
10-11-2009 20:04
Thanks Osprey but those things you gave me all require the user to fuss around with their inventory which I want to completely avoid... usability is key here.. I've got first time users as clients and having them go to inventory is to be avoided at all costs. I am trying to get my users to "copy and wear" in one click... it's much easier. I know how to do it the other (scripted) way, just don't want to.

You did however imply that left-click to open was only for stuff you own? But I've seen this for object givers that I don't own and they successfully allow me to copy and wear others' objects (a HUD actually) as I would expect.

I can't find any documentation on how this left-click "Open" attribute is supposed to work. I'm begining to think it's just temporarily broken, even though I am interacting with another example in-world that someone else created just fine. I thought I copied its setup exactly but there's obviously something still wrong.

This other persons working object giver is deeded to group (not shared to group tho) and has contents for sale for L$0. I tried setting up my object teh same and it still doesn't work. Interestingly, when I add my non-proviledged AV to my group then the left click to open starts to work but the contents is now only ";(no transfer)" instead of both no mod/no trans, but it still doesn't copy and wear sucessfully due to perms.

The madness continues.

You have to deed to group and share with group too - that makes the toucher an owner of it when he has the right group tag on.

You learn something new every day - well I do, anyway. Watty's still struggling, but it seems like it's just bugged. It's easy to set it so anyone can open and get a buy pane, but fails at "copy and wear" saying no permission to copy.
Anyone have any info to share?

must be member of group to work

The *only * way I could get this to work for AVs other than my own object owning avatar was to deed the object to the group, share it with the group, set the contained content object for sale for L$0 *AND* add my alternate AV to the owning group temporarily... then and only then did it work. Which is not a solution for general public AVs which means it still doesn't really work properly or as I would expect at all.

I would hope there a bug opened for this in JIRA.
