I'm now happily second-living in a rental situation on the mainland. After building some stuff and having it returned to me I quickly learned to wear my group tag while building. I'm under the impression, though that anything I make now is free game for all the other residents in the group. I don't mind sharing. But I'm wondering now how I can make things, leave them out unattended, etc. and not have them taken away or moved or textured funny. You get the idea. I guess what I'm asking is, what land settings or object permission settings do I need to fiddle with?

You're actually fine unless you take the extra step of clicking "share with group" on an object you have sitting out. Merely having an object "set" to a particular group (as when you build while wearing your group tag) doesn't give anybody else the right to edit or pick up your items.

You should be okay as long as you are listed as the owner of the objects. You can set the group of the objects so that they won't be auto returned and this won't affect the permissions or ownership of the objects at all. They will still be yours and yours alone.
The thing that you don't want to do is to deed the objects to the group. When you deed an object to a group, the group becomes the owner of the object. Lots of problems can occur with this, including getting the next owner permissions screwed up so that the object is no longer usable.
That said, there are some things that have to be deeded to the group when you are using group land. Radios that change the parcel's music stream, for example.

Thanks for your replies. I'll look at this next time I'm able to get in.

Just setting an item to the group is no risk. On my land, my Partner sets all her prims to my land group. They still belong to her, but my auto-return won't return them, because the parcel is deeded to the group.
Do not deed the items to the group, and do not check the "share with group" permission, and you'll be fine.

You don't even need to have the parcel deeded to the group. If the parcel is merely set to group and autoreturn is on any objects set to that group will be unaffected.
